We kicked off 2024 with Anthony Doerr’s All the light we cannot see, a beautifully written novel about the intersection of two different lives as Europe plunges into war, illustrates how good & hope can be found in the darkest of times.

Celia Imrie’s Orphans of the storm is a well researched book based on true events, and was enjoyed by all.

The third book of the year was one of John Steinbeck’s lesser known novels, Cannery Row.It was universally agreed that he is in a league of his own, this book provoked a lot of discussion & admiration.

A Terrible Kindness by Jo Browning Wroe both of which provoked lively discussion on very different subjects

William Horwood’sA Boy with no Shoes

The Night Gate, one of many by Peter May.

The Novel in the Viola by Natasha Soloman a very different and utterly absorbing story which provoked a good discussion.

A Kind of Anger by the old hand Eric Ambler, yes he’s still alive and it is complicated and far fetched and our lunch was better!
